Week 3 - Day 3
(8) Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble.
Reading: It’s always important when reading to know the author and who he was talking to. We know the author is Peter, and in this case, we know he is talking to believers. One thing we know about Peter through scripture is that sometimes he is quick to react and often he lacked sympathy to his brothers early in his walk with Christ. This was probably a major area of growth in his walk with the Lord. God showed him that in order to grow the Kingdom of God, he had to be patient and loving to fellow believers as well as forgiving, and so do we. We need unity among believers so we can be effective for the Lord.
The most successful baseball teams not only submit and follow their coach, but they have a great chemistry between teammates. All of us that have been on teams know that sometimes our teammates make mistakes. When a mistake happens, usually, how the rest of the team responds determines how that teammate comes back from his error.
Peter is telling us in this scripture that we are all on the same team with the same goal, so when a teammate makes an error, we need be an encourager and show compassion. This way, when we make the error, we will have people building us up. This is the way to be the best team possible so that we can accomplish our goal.
Reflection: Are you quick to condemn, slander, or gossip about a brother? Do you forgive easily? What practical ways can you take to embody verse 8 on your team?
Prayer Prompt: Dear Lord, please give me patience and understanding with my fellow believers. Teach me to be someone who unites instead of divides. Thank you, Lord, for always loving me.
