Week 8 - Day 3
(8) But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. (9) The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
Reading: Yesterday, Peter dismantled people that mock God’s promise of the second coming of Christ. Peter pointed to the work of God throughout history. Today, Peter continues to hammer the point home.
We have such a small view of God and eternity. Our life is like the time it takes one strike to cross the plate in a nine inning game, if the game was the time humans have been on earth. Then, eternity to one of us is like the time it takes one strike to cross the plate in a whole regular season of a baseball team… but even longer than that!
When people discount God and his promises, a lot of the time the reason is because we are so finite and can’t see the big picture. Peter is saying “with the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day” because time in our world is nothing to him. A thousand years ago is like yesterday to him. He is outside of time and sees it all happening at once. So when he promises something, for it to come to pass in our world, it is very quick to him compared to the time we think it takes.
The good thing is that God is patient with us, as Peter says. When we are impatient, he is patient. His will is that you would turn from your sin and join him. This world is not done yet because he wants many of us to have the chance to spend eternity with him. Thank God that when we sin, he remains patient, and we should be so thankful for every moment he gives us!
Reflection: When is the last time you were impatient and what was it about?
Prayer Prompt: Lord, you are so patient with me. I continually do what I think is right in my impatience. I deny and doubt your word and promises because of my impatience. Give me a patient heart. Let me see the world like you see it. Help me to be patient in every circumstance with people and situations. Forgive me of my sins, and lead me on a path of repentance.
