Week 1 - Day 6

(17) Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work impartially, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear. (18) For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, (19) but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. (20) He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. (21) Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.

Reading: When we come to be judged after this life is over there are two options. We will be judged based on ourselves or by the blood of Jesus. In other words, there must be a payment for our sins – by us or someone else. And our deeds don’t measure up to a holy God.

One sin against a perfect and holy God is bound for destruction. But God did the amazing thing in and through his Son that lived a perfect life, and he died as a sacrifice for our sins! He took our penalty. Now, we believe in him and accept the gift of grace through his sacrifice. God doesn’t see us and our failures when we trust in Christ, but he sees Christ’s blood!

The best analogy for this on the baseball field is a sacrifice bunt or fly. The batter totally gives up his at-bat for the runner to move up on the basepath -- and sometimes to get home.

Peter also stresses that we can’t buy our way out -- with gold or silver or our “good works” and talent. It’s only by faith in Jesus that we can be pardoned from the punishment that we deserve!

Reflection: What is something (big or small) that you need forgiveness for?

Prayer Prompt: Lord, my works and deeds are not good enough. The only work that is good enough is the work Jesus performed in dying on the cross and raising to life from the tomb. Humble me and show me that I am not good enough on my own. I trust in you.
