Week 8 - Day 5
(11) Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives (12) as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. (13) But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.
Reading: As we’ve been reading about, the time is coming when this world will come to an end. Peter tells us that “everything will be destroyed”. If we really believed this, would we choose to live life differently? Would we store up our treasures here today in material things or in heaven? Would we change how we live? Would we try to live “holy and godly lives”? If we really lived like we believed this, things would definitely change.
What if you knew that your last day of baseball was tomorrow? Would you play differently? Would you try to have fun on the diamond or would you begrudgingly walk onto the field? Of course you’d play differently!
Today is one day closer to the end of the world, as Peter is telling it. This life it temporary, but the next life is eternal. Which one do you prefer to invest in? It would be wise to live a godly life now and to invest in eternity. Peter is saying that our worldly investments are going to melt in the fire, but righteousness will dwell forever in the new kingdom. So, it’s really a no-brainer!
Reflection: What worldly things can you let go of today? What eternal things are in need of your investment?
Prayer Prompt: Lord, give me a mind and a heart that thinks about eternal things. Let me cast aside the momentary pleasures of the world. They will fade away, but you will be with me forever. Purify my heart, mind, and soul into a person that cares about your kingdom above everything else!
