Verses:
Genesis 1:26-27 says, “Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground. So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”
Psalm 139:1-5,13-14 says, “You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely. You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me…. For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”
Reading:
Looking at the Bible can be overwhelming because it’s such a big book. Maybe you want to know what this “Christian thing” is all about, but you don’t have the time to investigate this colossal story. Where can you start?
First, don’t get overwhelmed. The Christian faith is a simple thing to understand, but people like to make it complicated. There are a lot of details, sure, but the story is simple. We’re going to walk you through it in this study.
The first book of the bible is called Genesis, and it outlines how the world began in chapter one. A major takeaway from this book is that one God created everything we see and experience in this world – in heaven (the unseen spiritual world) and on earth. What is amazing about this account in Genesis is the intentionality of what he did. He created each thing – the sun, moon, stars, plants, sea creatures, beasts, and then his crowning jewel – people. After he created everything, he called it “very good” because it was. We can tell just by reading Genesis that he loves his creation deeply in the way that he made it – with skill, purpose, and care.
God is not too big to care for individuals though. Unlike what some people may say, he is not a far off God. Psalm 139 in the Bible echoes this very fact, saying, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”
Think about this. Did you know that there is not a baseball-stitching machine in existence? Every baseball that is made is hand-stiched, all 108 double stitches. That red thread that keeps the ball together is like the blood pulsing through your veins. You are a unique creation of God. He took time to create you how you are, to be used for a purpose!
Despite other major theories about God throughout the world, there is one God and with his great power, he created everything. He created you specifically, and he put his personal touch on you.
Prayer Prompt:
God, you are creator of everything. That takes great power, skill, and intelligence. I can see too that you took great care in creating the world. I don’t understand why a lot of things are the way that they are, but I will rest in this fact today: you created us intentionally – with care and with a purpose. Thank you for knitting me together the way that I am. I want to know you on a deeper level. I will open my mind and heart to the gospel teaching through this study.
Reflection Questions:
How would you define God right now? Who is God?
How would you define yourself? Who are you?
Response:
Talk to someone about who God is today (at least one thing about his character) and then ask that same person how they would define your character.
